What Dreams Reveal About Your Mindset

Tracking and analyzing dreams can bring both spiritual and practical benefits to our lives. Dreams are seen by some as communication from those not on the physical plane. Others understand dreams to be messages from our subconscious and related to our current experiences. Either way, dreaming is a resource we can use to improve issues or problems in our waking life!

Doing research on this topic I came across this book which discusses how dream interpretation is used in cognitive therapy. While it is geared towards how therapists can utilize dream information to assist their patients, I believe there is applicable information for the rest of us self-educating peeps as well!

Paying attention to our dreams and what we express in them is just as important as being aware of our thoughts and actions during the day. Dreams help highlight what we are holding onto, how it is affecting us, and ways we can improve. Here are some important ways your dreams reveal your current mindset and will help you become more mindful of your Self.

Dream Meaning is Personal

Everyone dreams in their own way, and depending on how you dream reveals some character traits that you carry! It also shows where you are spending a lot of time, either physically or mentally.

For example, do you rarely remember your dreams, or are they so vivid you have no problem remembering every detail long after you’ve awoken? Your dream retention can be related to how centered and mindful you are and if you are having trouble focusing during the day.

When it comes to what happens in your dreams, think of how those pieces fit within the context of your own life. Some people turn to dream dictionaries to understand what their dreams are trying to tell them. However, people, objects and more can hold a specific meaning based on your life experience that isn’t grasped in the general dictionary definitions you may find. Look to understand your dream through your personal understanding of symbols and see how the interpretation shifts.

Dreams are Subjective

Not only are dreams a personal experience, they are also based on your values and beliefs. Dream themes tend to reflect your morals.

For example, people who have a tendency for analysis and critical thinking may find many of their dreams relate to solving problems. Others who believe in following the law may have dreams that follow a similar respect for order.

Noticing repeating or similar themes in your dreams can help you become more mindful of your mentality during the day. Creating a routine for dream tracking will also help you to see how your dream theme patterns shift as you grow, go through tough spots, and more!

Emotions are Emotions, Day & Night

Emotions play a large role in shaping our dreamscape, and for good reason. The emotions you feel in your dreams are just as real as the emotions you feel when you are awake. Because of this, dreams help highlight any emotions and feelings you hold, but may not be aware of.

If you have a habit of repressing emotions during the day then your dreams can become an outlet through which your mind expresses them at night. This is why paying attention to your dreams is so important.

Even when you aren’t aware of anything you are repressing, tracking your emotional reactions in dreams can help reveal if anything is there subconsciously. You can then use what you receive at night to maintain a healthy and positive mindset all day long.

Redirect your Dreams, Redirect your Mindset

Tracking your dreams can uncover more about your mindset than you may be ready for. So what happens when you start to notice negative patterns in your dreams? Does that mean you have a negative mindset? Not necessarily. Once you find your dreamscape starting point, you choose where to go from there.

While dreams can highlight ways we are not practicing a loving mindset, they do more than that. Dreams are moldable and can be restructured in the same way you can change your automatic thinking!

Practice mindfulness in your nighttime routine and set positive intentions before bed. When you have a bad dream experience, look for the positive takeaways. Don’t get down on yourself when it happens, but practice self-love with understanding and patience. Over time, see how the positive reinforcement and mindful actions change your nighttime experience and dreams for the better.
